INTRODUCTION

My name is Evelyn Washington and I am attending the Community College of Denver as a theater major. I found my love for the theater arts at a very young age and have been a play lover ever since. Now, even though I am a theater lover if you're anything like me you don't want to sit for hours in a space with strangers for something that isn't gonna be worth your while. That is why I have wrote this blog. This blog gives you a few great plays that I have got the pleasure of seeing around the Denver. These plays are going from town to town so if they come to a city near you you should definitely snag a ticket. These plays are amazing to watch and give you a BANG for your buck. I hope they are useful to you. Enjoy!

THE LION KING

The Lion  King is a worldwide phenomenom that took the world by storm debuting June 15, 1994. The directors Royer Allers and Rob  Minkoff started an epic classic that is sure to be enjoyed by children and adults around the world. The Lion King made it's very first musical debut in July 1997 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and since has been a theater force to be reckoned with.

AFFORDABILITY DON'T LET THE PRICE FOOL YOU.

The price for the tickets is more on the expensive side but well worth it. The average ticket ranges from anywhere from $125.00 to $30.00. If you change your mind about going because you don't want the "loser" seats RETHINK FAST. The cast have surprises in store that make everyone in the auditorium feel as though they are in front row seats at all times.

ATMOSPHERE CLASSY AND FUN

The atmosphere is fun because you and everyone around you already have something in common. Not just that you're there to watch a play, not just that you're in a theater and are dressed nice, but that you and everyone there share a love for The Lion King. You all are embarking in a new adventure that you have already shared. Everyone is excited and laughing and anticipating what's in store. You can feel it in the air and once the lights go off and the curtains go up everyone becomes silent; IT'S SHOWTIME!

PLAY SUMMARY SURPRISES AROUND EVERY CORNER...LITERALLY

The play starts off with the cast dressed as animals. With different animal headpieces, wings, and there was even a person on stilts (the giraffe). Antelope were skipping across the auditorium,  birds fluttering above the audience, elephants stomping around, cheetahs and my personal favorite a huge giraffe! Every animal in Africa that you think of was out there! All of these animals were coming from different entrances of the auditorium going towards the stage.  This was the highlight of the entire performance because it was so unexpected and unbelievable that I was experiencing something so beautiful in a play. Tears literally came from my eyes while watching this... it was simply remarkable!
Now don't get me wrong the beginning scene was my favorite part of the play but the rest of the play was right behind it. With the richness of all of the characters voices and the body movements of all the actors you would swear you were watching real drama that was going on in the animal kingdom. All of the actors enveloped their characters and brought forth a  whole new perspective on what a play could do. This play has everything you could think of: beautiful costumes, wonderful actors, unthinkable scenery, and everything else you could think of. Everyone should get a chance to experience something Newsday called "A jaw-dropping magnificent spectacle".

FENCES

AFFORDABILITY HIGH CLASS FOR A SMALL PRICE

Pretty affordable with it being in the venue and having the actors it had. I got my ticket due to the class I was in and the ticket was around $40-60 bucks.

ATMOSPHERE/SET-UP HOME SWEET... NOT!

The atmosphere even before entering the performance space was busy. Everyone trying to get their drinks and refreshments before the play began and rushing inside to find seats. I believe all this rushing came from me arriving a bit late. They say you should arrive at least 15 minutes before the designated time on the ticket so you won't have to rush and you can relax and have time to find your seats... they were right.
Upon entering the performance space there was an immediate sight of the front of a house. Outside the house on the right was a ladder leaning up against a fence and on the other side of the house were a tree with a rope with a knot at the bottom of it, later on in the play we find out what this rope is used for. The set gives you a feeling of living in the country and even though the set may be seen as “homey” you can tell through the “stuffy” atmosphere of the house and the cramped feeling of the set that the play isn't going to be so “home sweet homey”.

SUMMARY OF PLAY/FAVORITE MOMENTS & CHARACTERS MISFORTUNE OR DESTINY

The performance begins with the protagonist Troy Maxson and his best friend Jim Bono making a noisy entrance. The conversation the two were having was very humerous but listening past the laughter and funny jokes the theme and the main focus of Troy's life was being told. Troy wanted to drive the dumpster truck instead of being the trash mover and that was what he thought would make him happy and finally content with life. In the end we see that that's not all he needed for his life to take a turn for the better.
There were 7 main characters of the play Troy Maxson, Cory Maxson (the son), Rose Maxson (the wife), Gabriel Maxson (Troy's brother), Jim Bono (troys friend), Lyons (Troys other son before his marriage with Rose), and Raynell Maxson (Troys illegitimate child).
The acting of all of the performers was spectacular to say the least but there was one person that stuck out more than the others and this was the mother, the wife, and the person trying to hold everything together, Rose played by Kim Staunton. With her witty remarks such as “If you ain't the marrying kind move out the way so the marrying kind can find me” and her passionate love towards her husband, her friends, and family she is no less than the lady of the hour.
My favorite moment of the play was in the end when Troy was battling with the devil. Troy was on his very last strike and it was his time to go. Troy being a prior baseball player had his bat and on his last swing (which I think was also his last breath) the scene closed with one swing of his bat to fight off "Mr. Death" and everything turns black.
Fences is a remarkable play of love and hardship. Living in Pittsburgh in 1957 would be no cake walk for anyone no less than an African American family trying to be comfortable living day by day. This play gives us a glimpse into the world in those times and makes us grateful for the opportunities we have now and the times we live in. Definitely worth every penny!

A RAISIN IN THE SUN

AFFORDABILITY SAY WHAAAAAT?!

The tickets for this show are out of this world affordable. $5 for students with a student ID and the most is about $10 for non students and students that don't have an ID. The affordable prices are due to it being a show in a Community College so they want students to come and partake in the event but with the understanding of the college students budget.

ATMOSPHERE FUN AND UPBEAT

The performance is set in a Proscenium space with two large balcony areas. Upon entering we were greeted by a guitarist playing a soothing tune on his guitar. This gave me a feeling of relaxation. The atmosphere was quaint and normal. Students trying to find seating and everyone was just ready for what was in store.

SUMMARY/FAVORITES

Walter Younger is looking for a get rich quick scheme. His family lives in the ghetto and he is tired of seeing them all suffer. Even though he has destructive ways of doing this his efforts come from a heart filled place. He is the protagonist of the story. The other main characters are Bernetha (Walter's sister), Lena (Mama), Ruth (Walter's wife), Travis (Walter's son), Asagai (Bernetha's boo thang/ professor), George (wealthy guy in love with Berneatha), Mr. Linder, Bobo (Partner of Walter in liquor store business), Willy, and Ms. Johnson (the Youngers neighbor).

All of the actors in the play mesh very well together. The actor that stood out to me the most would be Sherie L. Jones who played Mrs. Johnson. When she came out she completely took over the scene. From her eating of the sweet potato pie to the rambling on about the apartment, her presence was known and very invited by the audience. She made her character come to life in a way that if you were an acting enthusiast you had to ask yourself "I wonder if the director told her to do that"? She was amazing! I ended up having a class with her after this and she was awesome then too.
This play tackles many social issues such as poverty, abortion, and discrimination but the biggest social issue of the play was the chase of the American Dream. From the beginning of the play we see money coming up then it progresses and Walter loses some money but at the end of the play they hold on to their own piece of their dream which is the house. Walter is chasing after a get rich quick scheme,  Ruth just wants to get out of that cramped apartment, Beneatha wants to have a great career, and Mama just wants the family to be happy and at piece. All of these characters hold onto a little piece of what we would all consider to be the American dream. Definitely worth watching!
